About Rex Botanica

I’m Dexter Mitchell, the founder of Rex Botanica. My love for carnivorous plants began as a kid, exploring a conserved bog during a summer camp in Mobile, Alabama. Seeing my first pitcher plants in the wild sparked a lifelong fascination with their beauty, ingenuity, deadliness, and the delicate ecosystems they support.

I was devastated to learn that these incredible plants are under threat of extinction due to habitat destruction and poaching. As a fellow Alabama native, I’ve always felt a special kinship with carnivorous plants, developing a deep love for the species that call my home state their own. Over time, that love has expanded to include carnivorous plants from around the world, fueling my commitment to their protection and conservation.

I named Rex Botanica after the T-Rex, one of the most famous and fearsome dinosaurs of all time. Both the T-Rex and carnivorous plants took eons to evolve, adapting perfectly to survive in their respective habitats. Carnivorous plants and dinosaurs have fascinated me since childhood, but unlike the T-Rex, we still have the opportunity to protect and preserve carnivorous plants—not just in Alabama, but across the country and the world.

Now, I’m sharing my passion for these plants and their conservation by growing and sourcing high-quality, affordable carnivorous plants for collectors, hobbyists, and curious minds. Through cultivation and education, I hope to inspire the same sense of wonder and joy in others—one deadly leaf at a time.
